SCHOOL EXCURSIONS & TEACHING PROGRAMS

Q Station Sydney school excursion education programs explore the place, spaces and history of this heritage-listed site and National Park, located on North head and overlooking the magnificent Sydney Harbour. Spanning more than 150 years of Australian history, the 65 original buildings set on 35 hectares of bush land allow us to retrace the steps of those who have gone before to empathetically connect with the place and its many stories.

The stunning natural environment serves to remind us that long before the site was used as a Quarantine Station, it is acknowledged that the local Aboriginal people used Car-rang gel (North Head) as a special place for healing and teaching by the koradgee (wise ones). First contacts between the local Aboriginal people and the First Fleeters took place in nearby coves.

School excursion Education Programs at Q Station are designed to provide engaging learning experiences in an ever-evolving, historically and geographically-significant context across primary, secondary and tertiary programs.  We also provide further learning for teachers with our Professional Development programs in place.

Themes of migration; health, medical technology and infectious disease; class, gender and race; play out alongside the personal stories, the hopes and fears of those quarantined which all come into focus at Q Station.   Activities are designed to develop critical, creative and reflective thinking skills. Engagement with the natural and built environment, primary sources, artefacts from the heritage collection and stories from the site all provide a rich context for meaning-making across all ages, stages and subject areas with our school excursion programs.
