The first experience most visitors have upon their arrival is a comprehensive introduction to the former Quarantine Station through the Luggage Store Visitor Centre located alongside the wharf.
The current Visitor Centre is the former Quarantine Station's Luggage Store. It was the first building that former internees saw and came in contact with, and it was from this point that the process of being quarantined began.
The combination of arrival by water taxi onto the wharf, an introduction to the site in the Luggage Store Visitor Centre, and launching onto the site by guided tour, creates an arrival experience not to be forgotten and one that reflects the same route as former internees.
The Luggage Store Visitor Centre features displays about the former Quarantine Station and experiences, including reconstructions of First and Third Class ship cabins from the RMS Niagara and a high tech interactive model of Q Station. There is an information counter, where tour tickets can be purchased, and a retail outlet featuring a collection of merchandise.
Significant features associated with the building's former use as a luggage storage facility have been preserved and interpreted through displays and signage including the rails used by the luggage railway and the luggage racks used to store cases.
The visitor centre is open 7 days a week during school holidays, on public holidays and during peak periods. During other times we operate Wednesday to Sunday.
