about our tours

From the 1830s to 1984 migrant ships arriving in Sydney with suspected contagious disease anchored inside North Head and off-loaded passengers and crew into quarantine to protect local residents from the threat of infection.

After several weeks most passengers were released to settle as Australian residents. Some passengers experienced a first class resort, making new friends and sharing dreams of a bright new future. For others it was a far more frightening experience of disempowerment, disease and death.

To really understand what these people went through, and the spirit they left behind, we have created a range of hosted tours. These experiences offer customers varying levels of opportunity to participate in activities that bring out the underlying stories and emotions often lost with a traditional walk and talk tour. We have replaced guides with hosts, who still tell stories but now act as director for participants to involve themselves in activities designed to make the experience more real.

We are also offering half day and overnight education programs for schools that delve deeper into subjects like immigration, health, disease, changing social values, heritage, environment and tourism management.

appropriate footwear

Absolutely no thongs or sandals may be worn during any tour at Q Station. Customers wearing inappropriate footwear will not be allowed to join the tour and there will be no opportunity for a refund or to reschedule. It is advised to wear comfortable walking shoes. If you have booked this tour on behalf of other people, please ensure this information is communicated as it is regretful when customers are not allowed to join the activity.

your fitness level

Please note that our tours include some walking that involves some steep inclines and declines at times.

what to wear

Being an outdoor activity, we recommend bringing a hat and sunscreen for the day time tours and wet weather clothing if rain is forecast. We recommend that guests bring water with them, particularly on warmer days. It can get quite cold in winter so ensure you wear warm clothing.
