Q Station is a contemporary take of the former North Head Quarantine Station. Originally occupied by the Garrigal people, North Head was a meeting place with strong spiritual significance. In the 1830s a quarantine station was established, which operated until 1984.
Migrants suspected of carrying contagious disease were quarantined at the site to protect the local Sydney community from infection.
Originally chosen for its isolation and safe anchorage options, the site today comprises 65 buildings, several archeological sites and spectacular vantage points for viewing Sydney Harbour and the Sydney Harbour National Park.
Now leased and in the care of the Mawland Group, the site has been transformed into Q Station, a place for powerful, rejuvenating experiences to explore the future by connecting the past to the present.
The operations of Q Station are proudly managed by Mirvac Hotels & Resorts on behalf of the Mawland group.
The first experience most visitors have upon their arrival is a comprehensive introduction to the former Quarantine Station through the Luggage Store Visitor Centre located alongside the wharf.
The current Visitor Centre is the former Quarantine Station's Luggage Store. It was the first building that former internees saw and came in contact with, and it was from this point that the process of being quarantined began.
The combination of arrival by water taxi onto the wharf, an introduction to the site in the Luggage Store Visitor Centre, and launching onto the site by guided tour, creates an arrival experience not to be forgotten and one that reflects the same route as former internees.
The Luggage Store Visitor Centre features displays about the former Quarantine Station and experiences, including reconstructions of First and Third Class ship cabins from the RMS Niagara. There is an information counter, where tour tickets can be purchased, and a retail outlet featuring a collection of merchandise.Significant features associated with the building's former use as a luggage storage facility have been preserved and interpreted through displays and signage including the rails used by the luggage railway and the luggage racks used to store cases.
During the Winter season, the Visitors Centre is open Monday to Friday 10am - 11am and all day Saturday and Sunday from 10am. Refreshments & snacks are available on these days.
